Sebeș/Cugir, September 2026 – As part of the global “140 Years. 140 Places.” celebration, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class world tour stopped in Sebeș and Cugir, highlighting the connection between the brand’s pioneering heritage, its worldwide production network and the people and communities shaping its future.
Launched after the world premiere of the new S-Class on January 29, 2026, the initiative sends three new S-Class saloons on a global drive of more than 50,000 kilometres across six continents. The route connects 140 symbolic locations, each reflecting a chapter of Mercedes-Benz heritage, pioneering spirit and global presence – from historic milestones and legendary roads to major cities, production sites and local communities.
On September 14, the S-Class models arrived in Romania. In Sebeș, the convoy was welcomed with traditional Saxon dances before continuing to the 9G-Tronic production area. In Cugir, the vehicles were greeted with the traditional offering of bread and salt and a performance by the Cugir marching band, bringing local heritage and community spirit into the celebration. The date also held special significance for Star Transmission, marking 25 years since the company was founded on September 14, 2001.
The stop in Romania recognized the contribution of the Sebeș and Cugir locations to the global Mercedes-Benz production network. Over the years, both sites have continuously developed their manufacturing and engineering capabilities, supported by the expertise, commitment and adaptability of their highly qualified teams.
Throughout the journey, the new S-Class is joined at selected checkpoints by classic vehicles, current production models and local fleet cars, creating encounters that bring the brand’s history to life. The tour connects customers, Mercedes-Benz Club members, fans, employees and communities through local celebrations, stories and showcases, while regular updates allow audiences around the world to follow the route. The global drive is scheduled to conclude in Stuttgart in October 2026, returning to the city where the Mercedes-Benz story began.
“The visit of the 140 Years convoy to Sebeș and Cugir connects our local teams with the rich history of Mercedes-Benz. It is a reminder that every generation of employees contributes to shaping the future of the brand,” said Gheorghe Achim, general manager of Star Transmission & Star Assembly.
The anniversary marks 140 years since Carl Benz filed the patent for his three-wheeled motor car on January 29, 1886 – widely regarded as the birth of the automobile. Under the banner “140 Years of Innovation,” Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the people, technologies and ideas that have advanced mobility ever since and continue to shape its future.
