This was the first action of this kind of the German Consulate, and it was prompted by the fact that Germany (double world champion) is the host of the World Female Football Championship. At the tournament organized by the German consulate, ten teams of girls from Sibiu high schools announced their presence. The competition was held at the sports complex “Luceafarul” on 4 June, between 9.00 and 14.30 and Star Transmission was one of the sponsors of the event.

Through this tournament, the German Consulate in Sibiu is trying to encourage women’s football, on which, unfortunately, not much emphasis is placed in Romania, although it is as spectacular and exciting as that practiced by men. The female football championship is the most important international football competition for women. The same as the one reserved for men, the women’s championship takes place every four years between the national teams of FIFA member states. The first Worlds Cup Women tournament took place in 1991, sixty-one years after the first men’s tournament. The Romanian team did not qualify for the World Championship, finishing the preliminaries in 4th place, in the qualifying group.
